Aqua Enviro Secures Funding to Study Reuse of Wastewater Algae Biomass

Aqua Enviro, a leading environmental consultancy firm has secured a project funding to study beneficial use of algae biomass cultivated during wastewater tertiary treatment process.

The prime objective of the study is to identify potential markets for the algal biomass cultivated during the water treatment of various types of wastewater.

The funding was received under the UK grant titled, “Commercial use of biomass generated by microalgal treatment of wastewater” wherein Industrial Phycology (I-Phyc) has commissioned the firm to initiate market research study in the wastewater and biomass sectors.

To carry out the study, Aqua Enviro will do the market research to analyze the viability and economic feasibility to recycle and reuse the algae harvested from the wastewater treatment algae reactor patented by the I-Phyc.

Industrial Phycology, a provider of sustainable wastewater operations, has been making efforts to develop an algae-based reactor to remove phosphorous from wastewater as an alternative to commonly used ferric sulfate or metal ion dosing which remains a preferred choice of water companies in the UK.

Initially, the reactor is designed to carry out small wastewater treatment operations with the capacity of less than 1000 domestic population. I-Phyc’s algae reactor delivered successful results for the treatment of wastewaters from fruit juice, domestic wastewater and wastewater from dairy farming and tin mining.

Aqua Enviro is planning to focus the investigation efforts in finding the beneficial uses of algal biomass produced from multiple sources including biofuels, biolubricants, pigments, fertilizers, plastics, commercial products, foams, bioresins, animal feed, fish feed, omega 3 oils and anaerobic digester feed.

Industrial Phycology’s Chief Scientist, Lucie Novoveska conveyed that the study will provide the opportunity to work in the direction of chemical free wastewater treatment. I-Phyc’s potential to produce a value-based by-product in the wastewater plant while allowing to devise an environment friendly approach to remove phosphorous from the wastewater.
